Dick Miller helps students print Christmas cards

Midcoast Printmakers, Inc. received a Community Grant to sponsor printmaking workshops for members of the community. The first group was the Big Brothers Big Sisters that met Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscotta. Dick and Kay Miller demonstrated a relief printing method using styrofoam to make impressions on art paper. The younger students worked with their high school counterparts to create beautiful cards for their family and friends.

Other printmaking sessions will take place in January with other groups.

The Printmakers have recently moved to 648 Main St. in Damariscotta. New classes for January will be announced soon, along with a gala grand opening party.

Palermo Jr. High Students Work at the Midcoast Printmakers Studio

Midcoast Printmakers hosted Kathy Sparrow’s seventh and eight grade advanced art students at their studio May 15. The Palermo students learned how to make collagraphs and came to the studio to print them during the half day workshop. Some students also made monotypes as well using the press at the studio. Donations from Salt Bay Art Supply as well as the Palermo Parent Teacher Organization made the field trip possible and a success for all. Midcoast Printmakers, Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to education in all forms of printmaking. Visit our Classes page to see course listing.

Kay and Dick Miller of South Bristol, and Debra Arter of Damariscotta, learned this week that small prints they created will be part of the 13th Annual National Small Print Show in Creede, Colorado. Combined they will be showing monotypes, etching and a woodcut in the national show. Each print they created was less than 8 inches square. Two of Debra and Kay’s entries were selected to be part of a traveling show to the Evergreen Art Center at the conclusion of the regular venue in June.

Holly Berry’s linocuts are featured in a group exhibition at the University of Maine, Lewiston-Auburn Campus entitled Pollination: Evolving Miracles. The exhibit will be on display until June 7.

All four printmakers are active participants in the Midcoast Printmakers located in Damariscotta. Midcoast Printmakers has a wide variety of exciting events and ongoing classes at their studio located at Roundtop Farm. Consult the website for a complete listing of print classes for adults and children in various techniques. If one wants to try something new like solarplate etching or use a more traditional technique like linocut there is sure to be a qualified instructor willing to guide you.
